On Becoming...by Toke Makinwa
For daring to write a book that confronts a very sensitive and delicate subject matter where African culture tells women to be silent about it or pretend that all is well because of the fear of being ridiculed or being seen as a failure yet countless women and men the world over suffer deeply and in silence...so...Toke Makinwa, I salute you for your bravery and honesty in writing this book. For anyone who has ever known what it means to love deeply, the pain that comes with betrayal, the power of forgiveness and God's redemptive plan through it all, this is one book that you will definitely want to read. The institution of marriage is not a competition or a race to see who gets married first nor is it just about putting all your efforts into preparing for just the one wedding day nor is it to be entered into because one views it as a sense of accomplishment or achievement. This book proves that marriage should be entered into with a deep sense of commitment and maturity from the two people involved in the union who have genuine intentions of wanting to really be together to do marriage God's way and according to God's intention and purposes for the sacred and highly revered institution of marriage.
Toke handled a very tough and delicate subject matter in her book with such poise, grace, strength, contemplation and so much promise. This book will move you to tears. Very touching and so inspiring. It is so very well written that it makes reading it so easy. I literally could not put this book down from start to finish. Her recounting of the events that led to her very public debacle is so very profound. It will move you to tears. For the strength and dignity she showed throughout the whole ordeal, of a truth like she echoes in the book, God had to be with her to give her the grace to endure what she did. My favourite chapters in the book are the ones on:
*Let Go, Let God
Of a truth "...God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them"-Romans 8:32-NLT
This is one very insightful, informative and touching read. I love the fact that she was brutally honest and owned her own mistakes as well. This book is about her journey to overcoming and becoming all that God has purposed for her. This is a book that reminds BOTH women & men to be very careful with how we treat the hearts of those who give us their gift of love. Love is such a beautiful and precious thing but a heart in love can be such a fragile and vulnerable thing and though a bruised heart does mend with the passing of time and with the grace that God so generously supplies, may no one ever say that you were the reason for the scars that were inflicted on their hearts. There is no glory in that and certainly there is no blessing in that either.
I highly recommend this book to BOTH men & women. It's a MUST-read. You will be so glad you read it. You can purchase the e-book version of the book via these links.
